St. Mary's Cathedral is run by the Tokyo Korean Catholic Church. Sunday mass is held at noon and is in Korean. The building dates back to 1899, but was destroyed and replaced in 1964 with the current structure. It is designed by Kenzo Tange, who is one of the most important architects of the 20th century and a recipient of the Pritzker award (the most important award in architecture). The building takes the form of a cross if seen from above.

  • While I'm all about checking out churches and religious sites in other countries, this one was kinda over my head. I mean, I can appreciate the beauty and architectural ingenuity from the outside. But the inside seems almost sacrilegious as far as cathedrals go, in terms of it's austerity.   • An amazing building in the middle of nowhere. Having made the trip out, I feel that the inside of the church is quite breath-taking. And the outer structure is astonishing. Especially when taking into consideration the amount of concrete used. But unless your interested in architecture or going there for religious reasons, I would weigh my options.

  • I went here with my Architect friend on a day trip around Tokyo. The building was designed by the same architect who did some of the buildings for the Tokyo Olympics. The concrete walls form a cross shape at the top, but widen out to a larger space at the bottom.
