The classiest of Tokyo’s super onsen, Niwa no Yu is located off the beaten path, next to the Toshimaen amusement park in Nerima Ward. But its quiet, classy atmosphere and pretty surroundings?-no kids are allowed, the outdoor bathing area is set in a Japanese garden?-belies its proximity to its noisy neighbor.

Natural hot spring water is pumped from 1445 meters below ground, feeding a number of segregated indoor and outdoor baths and saunas including a bath lined in silky smooth Tiger's Eye quartz and a luxuriously tiled Turkish steam room. The onsen’s large co-ed area (if you didn’t bring a bathing suit you’ll need to rent one for 420 yen) makes Niwa no Yu ideal for couples. In addition to the regular indoor pool, there is a Dead Sea pool, outdoor jet baths and a Finnish sauna. After bathing there are plenty of relaxation options, including loungerooms with comfortable lounge chairs, restaurants, massage and esthetic treatments and more.

Towels and loungewear rental is included in the admission price, and all amenities like soap, shampoo and conditioner are provided.

  • Nice friendly staff, not much english spoken here though but they try their best to make you comfortable. I love the location it's in, makes you feel like a mini-getaway from tokyo city. Onsens are nice, outdoor sauna is pretty big.

  • Larger than La Qua and classier than Oedo Onsen Monogatari, Niwanoyu is also beats other Tokyo onsen with its cheaper admission and beautiful natural setting, which truly makes you feel as if you've left Tokyo. Avoid it on weekends when it gets crowded, and be prepared to cover up any tattoos as the ubiquitous no-tattoo rule is actually enforced here.
