i am japanese (but mostly raised abroad). i have high standards - hell i've hung out with pretty much the whole hi-profule japanese expat crew, most of all ia.
so watanabe hair had some pretty big standards to live up to. and they were alright, i suppose. there are too many uptight-looking foreigners in there who ruin the whole atmosphere. it's a salon people - relax.
either way, i won't be coming back here. why?
watnabe-san had a dr.seuss book in his waiting area.
dr. seuss spearheaded the anti-japanese propaganda effort that convinced people we were monkeys, worthy of wholesale baking/fireboming, and best off dead or in internment camps.
and yet the guy has 'green eggs and ham' in his salon.
i'm no wimp to post stuff like this whining behind people's back online. i told him.
his reaction was - 'meh'.
the guy has even lower standards than they did in the 60s. Even those crazy student anarchist punks back then would have sneered at seuss.
some young girl cut my hair. Tommy. hot as hell, sweet brit accent. we got along quite well,i got her digits - so maybe something good will come out after all out of this place.
Watanabe Hair, as you can tell from the other reviews, is excellent for straight perms. As you can also tell from the other reviews, they are excellent with hair - women's hair. Men's hair, however, is another plane of reality altogether.
I paid ニ万-ish for the privilege of having my hair butchered. The straight perm was fine - the cut was a horror story of a hack job.
The layering and thinning done on my shoulder-length hair is so bad I can't go in public with this sh*t. (Instead, my fave hat store, 'Cap and Hat CHEERS!' made a sudden small fortune off me having as I did to buy a range of new hats to cover this mess up for the year and a half it will take to grow back.)
Chie was my stylist. As I always have, I mentioned I wanted to be able to pull my hair back - not possible thanks to the irresponsible 'layering' hacking that she victimized the back of my head with. Little **tufts of hair** now actually stick out at the bottom of my head when I try to pull my hair back. You can't even imagine how nasty this looks.
Not even evenly, but here and there. This when I *specifically* said not to layer the back as it would make it impossible to pull the hair back.
Worse, I specifically asked that only the neck hair be taken off at the back. Chie instead trims *all the hair* at the bottom - and unevenly at that. What previously I could tie up naturally with the rest of my hair now looks like a shaggy, short mess. It literally looks like the remnants of a scorched earth campaign - patchy, haphazard, and dirty.
It takes a long, long time to grow that hair back. Thanks to Chie, I'll be doing so for more than a year, and my summer is ruined. I can't go on the beach with my hair tied up when little nasty tufts of hair and a shaggy short mess are exposed on the bottom. Why she couldn't just leave that hair alone as you would with a girl's, I have no idea - especially when I had asked her not to touch it.
As a golden bonus, what she *should* have layered properly and evenly - the hair at the top so that it it looks clean and multilayered when pulled back - she absolutely failed to. Instead she hacked off *one area* of the hair, resulting in a pony tail that looks like a fountain, is far too long, and ens up looking like someone vengefully hacked off a random piece of it.
I'm not one of those rich expats you see here all arrogant and stiff. I'm a poor-a$$ student who came down on a ghetto night bus from Hirosaki University in Aomori. That's how much I care about my hair and getting it done right. I'm a quiet guy, I never act arrogant with staff and what I asked my stylist here to do, I asked decently. She doesn't know how to do men's hair. She should never had laid a finger on mine.
I tried to remember why this didn't happen the last time I was in Tokyo - and then remembered it was because I had my cut at another place in Harajuku that I ended up at because Watanabe wad closed that week. If you're male with long hair and actually value it, go there. Steer clear of Watanabe Hair.
I had my haircut from Tommy.hello!!SHE IS FANTASTIC!!!Tommy is very professional.her English is perfect.so she understood exactly what I wanted.and she created my new hair style for me!I love it.I had a haircut which is 6500yen and treatment 4000yen.so worth it!feels so much better now! thank you very much!I'm so sure Tommy is one of the best hairdresser in Tokyo!definitely go back to her soon again!
Went in with dry, damaged hair and asked for a Straight Perm, Treatment, Hair trim, and fringe. I left with a beautiful head of hair and a huge smile on my face :) Tommy was my stylist and she did a wonderful job of listening to my ideas and turning them into reality.
The process was quite time consuming (5 1/2 hours total), but worth it. Definitely going back for touch ups, and I want to try the eyebrow service I saw being done to the woman next to me.
got a haircut from tommy.tommy is a japanese girl.she speaks perfect english with very cute british accent.the haircut is perfect of course but the shampoo, massage, conultation she does are also great!I'm so happy!if you are looking for a nice haircut in tokyo just visit her!
I got a cut and a straight perm at watanabe from Chie. She was very professional and helped me out even though I didn't know what style I wanted, same for my friend in the next chair. Don't be afraid of the language barrier here, Chie's English is perfect and you can tell her exactly what you need. Coming to a Japanese hair salon is a real experience because you get great service, including a back massage! At no time did I feel panicked about what was happening to my hair, I was very relaxed throughout the 3 hours+ process. I give it 4 stars because the straight perm didn't last as long as predicted and in less than 2 months I had poofy, wavy hair again =( When I left Watanabe I felt like a princess though. Total for cut and straight perm by Chie: 20,000+yen.
Getting a hair cut at Watanabe is getting a hair cut plus a massage, all in one. I had never had such a long shampoo session, but it was good! At some point during my second shampoo I realized that they were not washing my hair anymore but rather massaging my scalp for a good 7-9 minutes, and I enjoyed every moment of it.
After the shampoo, the massage continued on the chair with a nice shoulder, neck and back massage. By the time Momoi, my stylist, came to me, I was melting on my chair ready to take a nap. Luckily they offered me a cup of coffee (you could ask for tea too), and that brought me back to life.
The haircut (6,000 yen) went by fast after that, and I’m quite happy with the clean look. My only wish is that they had been more proactive in suggesting new cuts or styles for my hair -- I don’t know much about this, and since I was visiting such a well-regarded place, I hoped that they would do something like that.
Most people spoke fluent English, and there were plenty of foreign customers. Communication was certainly not a problem. Watanabe has a young, hip friendly vibe, and I’d definitely recommend checking it out.
