The Academy of Language Arts was established in 1984 with belief that the learning of Japanese should include an understanding of society, culture and history of Japan. ALA is a member of the Association For The Promotion of Japanese Language Education and a member of The Forum for Business Japanese sponsored by JETRO which is an extra-departmental body of MITI. Also authorized by The immigration Office as a Visa proxy.

  • 8 Reasons why you should study with us

1. Visa Proxy

  • ALA is authorized by the Japanese Ministry of Justice as its agent, and can help foreign students coming to Japan obtain a pre-college student visa. Students who register for an intensive course can have ALA apply for the visa in their stead.

2. Extracurricular Activities

  • Activities such as bus trips, sports events and parties are arranged each term to allow the students to interact with one another and teachers to get to know each other better.

3.Counselling

  • The staffs at ALA are always on hand to offer counseling and practical advice to students experiencing difficulties with life in Japan.

4.Scholarships

  • Students who attend all classes and are punctual throughout the term will be awarded a scholarship and will receive a discount on the following term's fees.

5.Assigned Teacher

  • One teacher is assigned to look after the needs of each class. He or she will follow the progress of each individual student.

  • For students wishing to attend Japanese universities or vocational schools, all the necessary information will be provided. Teachers are on hand to help students with any questions or problems.

  • We offer a free trial lesson to see the method of teaching, the curriculum, and how students participate in a class.

8.Tape Library

  • Students may borrow the tapes covering books used in class at no cost.


  • At ALA we offer over ten levels of instruction. Our curriculum places great emphasis on developing communication skills. To that end we use materials from everyday life to practice Japanese, such as newspapers, novels, etc.

    We pay special attention to the speaking abilities of our students when they take our placement test.

Work through the fundamentals of the textbook, and learn the basics of listening, writing, speaking and reading.
Beginners 2 6 months
Acquire the basics for everyday and social interactions
Intermediate 1 9 months
To convey one's own opinions and acquire the fundamentals for social interactions

*1-2 times per week: Watch soap operas, news or some other form of televised media to get exposure to natural everyday Japanese.


*The class will spend one unit per week reading the newspaper or a magazine article to get exposure to news writing and items ofcurrent interest.


*1-2 units per week: Students will do speeches and participate in discussions to strengthen their oral skills.


*There will be plenty of role-play exercises derived from the textbook to give students conversation practice.


*As the students' level gets higher, we will use the textbook less and less.

Intermediate 2 12 months
To make appropriate conversation in topics that are familiar to the student
Intermediate 3 15 months
To carry out relatively fluent everyday conversation that can cope with most situations
Advanced 1 18 months
To convey one's interests with confidence and appropriate vocabulary

*Textbook instruction, one unit per week.


*Grammar training two units per week. (At the second level of the Japanese proficiency exam)


*Conversation training two units per week(including formal speech)


*Video practice 1-2 units per week (with the latest soap operas, documentaries, news, etc.)


*Practice with unfiltered Japanese two units per week (Newspaper, magazines, novels, etc.)

Advanced 2 21 months
To convey one's interests in a natural way

*Video practice four units per week (comedy, variety shows, soapoperas, movies, news, talk shows, etc.)


*Vocabulary (including onomatopoeia and mimetic words)


*Elementary business Japanese


*Reading comprehension and research skills (Internet, news stories)


*Textbook instruction (at the first level of the Japanese proficiency exam)


*Students may request to include topics of their interest

Advanced 3 2 years
To carry out fluent everyday conversation

*Discussions and debates relating to newspaper articles and issues in society.


*Business Japanese, including honorific and humble speech.


*Watch news and documentaries with follow up discussions.


*Novels.

Advanced 4 More than 2 years
To be able to speak fluently about a wide range of topics

*Free conversation (depending on the interests of the class) Discussion and debates of a wide range of topics.


*Regional workshop. The class will meet half the time outside the classroom and visit places such as local elementary schools, community associations, universities, etc., where students will gather information and/or make presentations.


*Instruction in Japanese history (includes comparative exercises with the student's country of origin).


*Reading comprehension (fiction, plays and poetry).

  • ALA has the know-how to create customizable private lessons in which the student can focus on topics that are of importance to them, while still training in the necessary grammar.

    We will create an individual study plan that suits your goals, term and budget. In the past we've created plans such as business interactions, kanji or drafting documents.

    We offer the following three kinds of private lessons. Please consult with us at the school for more details.

    1) Fixed Lesson
    We go to a place of your choice to deliver the class. It can be at your office, home or another location. Please settle the schedule for 10 classes at a time, and cancellations are not accepted.

  • I took 3 months of course in this school. It was AWESOME ! The staff is very comprehensive even if they explain everything in Japanese. It's the rule.
