Nikko is home to a spectacular complex of shrines and temples which together are a World Heritage Site and the impressive Nikko National Park, with good views and hiking trails. It can be reached in under two hours from Tokyo and makes a good weekend trip, although a day trip is also possible.

  • I took a tour with a friend so that she could see another part of Japan. We visited a temple where we were able to see traditional Japan, had a traditional Udon and grilled fish lunch, and then enjoyed the scenery. A must see and do for visitors and a great place to escape for Tokyo locals. As enigmatic mentioned, book in advance.

  • By far one of the best weekend retreats from Tokyo I've ever had. The train ride out there is pretty short and there are tons of hotels with both western and Japanese style rooms. The onsens in this area really are stellar. Just keep in mind that Nikko is not exactly a well-kept secret...places book up pretty far in advance.
