Chanoma is legitimately certifiably cool, hip and otherwise trendy. It's located on the sixth floor of a building near the Meguro River, and it commands a nice view of the river and surrounding environs. The real charm of Chanoma is the restaurant itself. Modern candelabras sweep across the ceiling, and there's a chandelier made of reflective tensile near the cash register. There are tables with sixties mod chairs, but the really cool feature is the modern take on a traditional Japanese seating area. It's somewhere between a window seat and zashiki. The tables are large wooden trays which sit directly on the cushy bench. Chanoma also presents its menu in a really unique fashion: both the Japanese and English versions are hand painted onto large wooden blocks. I tried one of the seasonal teas (ichiban cha) and yuzu sherbet. The tea was good, but not what I'd term “ichiban.” The sherbet, however, was sublime. It came in a monumental three scoop serving. This is a great place to take a friend, a sweet heart or a notebook.
