Japan has more corporate coffee chains than I've ever seen in my life. Corporate coffee shops have a different feel than homegrown ones, and I prefer the homegrown, local feel any day. However, when I get off the train at Akasaka-mitsuke station, Zoka is a really convenient place to get a cup of coffee. I get kind of feed up with the omnipresent sweetness in American food, and coffee is no different. Since I like espresso in general and cafe mocha in particular, and I've had cafe mocha in American that's sweeter than a baby kitten. Zoka's mocha hinted at being sweet in enticing ways, and it made my toes curl with pleasure. What's more, they draw interesting designs in the froth. I only had muffins, so I can't really comment on the quality of the food, but the coffee is definitely good. The shop itself is very open: large French doors open out onto the street. There are also several interesting paintings on the wall, and as with most other corporate coffee shops, you can buy coffee and candies here as well. Zoka is a nice place to grab a coffee on your way to work, or share a coffee with friends. It would also be a suitable place for a casual date.
