  • Daidokoya sits one step higher than the cheaper kaiten-sushi places where you order through a closed-circuit system to the kitchen and where the sushi comes frozen from somewhere else. In contrast, Daidokoya has real chefs in the middle to whom you can direct your orders if nothing comes in the conveyor belt that strikes your fancy.

The prices are reasonable and if you hit Daidokoya before 8pm, the beer is half-price. The range of sushi available is really wide, and chances are they have pretty much any kind of sushi you can think of and a few you've never heard of before. One of the most interesting parts of my meal was trying raw whale sushi-a first for me. If you're comfortable breaking the whale-meat taboo (ask for kujira), this is an inexpensive place to give it a try.

The usual suspects-tuna, salmon, unagi, negi-toro, etc.-were all rather good. My sea urchin (uni) was a bit bitter, but I found redemption in a nice miso soup loaded up with clams. The conveyor has random signs written in English advertising some sushis but other items are only written in Japanese. If lost, the tea cups have a range of sushi items written on them with diagrams.

This is not a restaurant to linger for long. Rather, this is a place to load up on sushi goodness, fill your belly, and move on to another spot in Shibuya. With the exception of Sundays, Daidokoya is open until 4.30am. If this restaurant wasn't so close to Tsukiji Honten Kaitenzushi, I'd recommend it, but if you can handle the cue at Tsukiji Honten, you can get better value for your money there (though they do not stock whale).
