  • The modest entrance reveals little of the fashionable space tucked away in the basement that is Shinobu Tei. This is the Shibuya-branch of an upscale Izakaya chain that also has stores in Shinjuku, Akasaka and Ebisu.

Once in the basement, the place is absolutely stunning. The center of the restaurant is a system of ponds with water flowing between them and bridges that connect one part to the other. A gigantic curved mirror, ceramic-tile work and dried trees give the finishing touches to a space that was obviously designed by professionals to stun.

The dinning booths sit on the perimeter but there's a couple of enclosed circular tables in the middle that look rather hip.

The menu consists of small dishes to share, with an emphasis on Japanese fare. Some of the vegetables are organic and a supplemental menu outlines the seasonal offerings. Given the season when we visited, we ordered grilled Ayu (which is on season at the beginning of the summer), and this fresh-water fish was delicious. The homemade cold tofu is also worth a mention, brought to the table on a bed of ice with various toppings to sprinkle on top. While the food is not remarkable, it delivers freshness and was well executed.

Shinobu Tei boasts a wide selection of sake and shochu. In the shochu department they carry ones made out of taro, potato, sweet potato, rice and okinawan sugar-cane shochu. I'd particularly recommend the Hinoryu Asahi, a shochu made out of molasses.

The all-you-can-drink menu is relatively cheap at 1,500 yen for two hours, and most food dishes range between 500-1,000yen. Be warned however that the portions are on the small side so you will need quite a few dishes to put together a meal. A budget of around 4000yen per person should cover it. Reservations are probably a good idea.

This place is ideal for parties, groups of friends and dates. The design is meant to impress so this is probably a good choice if you are trying to make good first impressions.
