Really nice Mexican food in a laid back atmosphere.
I’ve heard loads about Fonda de la Madrugada -- it’s practically synonymous with Mexican dinning in Tokyo, but it’s expensive and I hadn’t had an opportunity to visit. So I was excited when they opened La Fondita, a more relaxed restaurant nearby.
I went for lunch, and thought that the set deal (1,200 yen) was excellent value. It included a salad, soup, drink, main and dessert. The absolute killer was the soup -- a nice chicken broth with rice, avocado, lime, tomatoes, fresh salsa and coriander. The aromas coming out of that bowl were amazing!
The salad was less fortunate, only because they plated it on an unnecessary fried tortilla that was greasy. The main was a vegetarian entree of potatoes and vegetables on green sauce with rice, beans and flour tortillas. I thought everything tasted good, but the beans were a tad too salty. The small cheesecake at the end was a nice finish.
Together with Salsita, this is the best Mexican food I’ve had in Tokyo. Service was good, the room inviting and the lunch offered good value for money. I’m giving it 4 stars for now, and might revise the rating later when I get a chance to go for dinner.
