  • I'm a picky eater (or drinker) when it comes to soups. I rarely order them, and when I do I'm generally disappointed-I prefer my food in the solid state better. Nonetheless, there are a few soups that I die for, and Tom Yam Kung is one of them. Luckily for me, that is the specialty at Tinun.

Located literally a step away from the Omotesando station, Tinun is a Thai restaurant complete with a painting of the Thai King and Queen (do not try to make jokes about them-they are highly respected). The food menu is primarily Thai, but they've also throw in a few other Southeast Asian dishes to complement it.

To begin with we had an order of Vietnamese spring rolls (nama-harumaki), that were good, but the sauce that came with them was even better. For mains we decided on the house's specialty, seafood tom yam kung, and chicken rice.

The soup was great-it came in a special boiler and was loaded with vegetables, seafood and lemongrass sticks that you'd be better advised not to chew. While tom yum kung is usually made with a clear broth, Tinun's version includes coconut milk that adds an extra bit of richness to the soup. The soup was not as spicy as you'd get it in Thailand, but it still packed a respectable punch.

Chicken rice is one of Singapore's most famous dishes, and it consists of boiled chicken in spices served with rice and a spicy dipping sauce. Tinun's version was pretty good and this would be a good place to give it a try if you've never had it before. However, if you can only manage to order one thing, go for the soup.

The decor is quite smart, and the service was quick and polite. On the whole I liked Tinun and will remember it for the soup. I would suggest bringing family members, groups or dates here, and slurp away on Tom Yam goodness.
