A Bathing Ape (BAPE for short) is a trendy hip-hop Japanese clothing brand that is worn by the likes of Kayne West or Jin Tha Emcee. Nigo (not his real name) started the brand in 1993 and now operates more than 30 stores in Japan and also in New York, Taiwan, Hong Kong and London.
BAPE specializes in urban/hip-hop clothing. The store in Omotesando is a reflection of their target audience and feels quite young. In addition to the clothing, BAPE also runs a record label and a hair salon (not in Omotesando) but the store has a music corner where you can listen to their new releases.
The lore goes that the name comes from the movie "Planet of the apes" combined with a Japanese saying that goes "A bathing ape in lukewarm water." The saying means that one is too complacent in one's current position and cannot move on; something that Nigo believed describes the current generation.
When in the store, look for the BAPE sta, a shoe that looks very much like a Nike Air Force one, and is one of their most popular items.
