Komparu-yu has been in business since 1863. Soaking in a relaxing bath and looking up at the old-fashioned high ceiling will transport you to a different time. There is a hot tub and a warm tub, and switching between the two is an invigorating experience.

  • Public bathing: I'm a fan. I like the idea of it as a social equalizer, and I like the actual act of bathing. In America, I like my baths hotter than most of my friends can stand; I can't hold a candle to the Japanese. Small public sento seem to have water warmed directly by the fires of Hades.
